An Effective Practice

Description

Brooklyn GreenBridge is the community horticulture program of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The program is designed to share the knowledge and resources of BBG with the neighborhoods of the borough. Brooklyn GreenBridge participates in the New York City Compost Project, providing composting information and assistance to community gardens, institutions, and individuals. The program also works with neighborhood and community groups who are starting new gardening projects or continuing existing programs, offering free workshops, plants, compost, and seeds.

Goal / Mission

Working with block associations, community gardens, community centers, and other groups, Brooklyn GreenBridge promotes conservation and community through gardening activities.

Results / Accomplishments

Last year alone, Brooklyn GreenBridge distributed over 12,000 seed packets and 10,000 tulip bulbs to registered Brooklyn GreenBridge community gardeners. Brooklyn GreenBridge also sponsors the Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest, offering reasonably priced windowbox planting kits to Brooklyn residents.

An Effective Practice meets the following HCI criteria:

  1. The program description includes at a minimum: the sponsoring organization, program goals, program implementation steps, and outcomes that have demonstrated program success and/or promise in achieving the program goal in one or more localities.
  2. The results from an evaluation of the program include quantitative measures of improvement in outcome of interest (i.e. increase in voter registration, not just delivery of voter registration drive) and/ or the outcome measure is increased or improved compared to the baseline measurement or the control group but the difference is not statistically significant.
