Women's Well-Being Index

View / Download

The California Budget & Policy Center has published a Women's Well-Being Index for California. This is an interactive visualization of data on how women are faring across five different areas-- Health, Safety, Employment & Earnings, Economic Security, and Political Empowerment-- each with six indicators of well-being in all of California's 58 counties.

When women thrive, their families and communities prosper. Yet despite decades of progress in job opportunities, earnings, and political leadership, women still face persistent barriers to accessing economic security, physical and mental health care, and representation in elected positions that greatly improve their lives and the well-being of their families and communities. The economic, health, safety, and leadership disparities are particularly acute for women of color who face the compounding effects of racism and sexism. The COVID-19 health and economic crisis has only exacerbated these inequalities, endangering the progress many women have been able to achieve in their workplaces, homes, and communities. California must center women in an equitable economic recovery – and particularly women of color – in order to build a brighter California. Policymakers, advocates, service providers, and community members can begin by viewing women’s well-being as distinct yet interrelated components relating to their health, personal safety, employment and earnings, economic security, and political empowerment. -- Kristin Schumacher, Senior Policy Analyst at the California Budget & Policy Center

The Index consists of five "dimensions", each with six indicators that are standardized and combined to give an overall index score for each county. The counties are ranked and highlighted on an interactive map of California by clicking on a county to view it's score for all topics and indicator types.
