A Good Idea

Description

The Houston READ Commission was established in 1988 by Houston's Mayor Kathy Whitmire and the City Council in an effort to strategically address the literacy needs of the city's adult population. As a nonprofit urban literacy coalition, the Commission provides a variety of free literacy services for adults and families. The Commission promotes economic self-sufficiency and individual determination through programs that offer adult basic education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), GED preparation (GED), family literacy, financial and computer literacy.

Goal / Mission

The Houston READ Commission's mission is to enrich the lives of adult Houstonians and their families by helping them achieve their full potential through literacy, and to contribute to a workforce that will ensure a strong economy and a promising future for the greater Houston area.

Results / Accomplishments

In 2004, the Houston READ Commission served 1,995 participants.

  1. The program description includes: the sponsoring organization, program goals, program funding source, program implementation steps and outcomes.
  2. The program evaluation is limited to descriptive measure(s) of success/accomplishment (i.e., program participation rates, number of services/education sessions/radio messages provided). Note: oftentimes, the program has been newly implemented and a program evaluation has not yet been conducted. Programs that have not yet been evaluated, but which show promise in improving health or quality of life, are classified as Good Ideas until an evaluation is conducted.
