Summer Reading

Summer Reading is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT and provides a GREAT ALTERNATIVE to screen time!

And it’s not just for kids… grown-ups can join in too! In the coming weeks, please help spread the word about our library’s summer reading program on Facebook posts, email invites, webpage listings, community calendars, and more! See attached flyers.

ALSO… Here are a sampling of key messages you might choose to share on social media:

  • Reading over the summer is incredibly important for students and their academic achievement. Here's why: Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss (a.k.a. Summer Slide).

  • It is estimated that the "Summer Slide" accounts for as much as 85% of the reading achievement gap between lower income students and their middle- and upper-income peers.

  • Take some reading adventures with your kids! Let them choose their own books from a reading list  like http://www.uusd.net/pages/Ukiah_Unified/ukiahreads.

  • Join in the Ukiah Reads community “book club” reading selection for the summer of 2016 (there’s a kid’s version and an adults version!)… this year’s book is I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

  • Reading can be an avenue to exploring the world and becoming a global citizen! Consider signing your child up for smallngreat.com to expand their horizons and earn FUN BADGES throughout the summer.

  • Take your reading outside this summer! Find a shady tree, park, or waterfront bench to sit on and enjoy the outdoors while you read. For ideas about great outdoor spots, go online to healthymendocino.org/smallsteps

At our Mendocino County libraries, you’ll find activities for all ages centered around year’s theme: “Read for the Win!” Coming soon to a library near you (mid-June through mid-August). For great summer reading lists for your kids, check out Ukiah Reads at http://www.uusd.net/pages/Ukiah_Unified/ukiahreads.

See you at the library!
