Community Marketplace 2019

By Holly Unluata & Julia Fetherston

Looking for something to do on a lazy Sunday? Come on down to the Community Marketplace, this Sunday, August 4th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on the Grace Hudson Language Academy School located at 1640 South State Street in Ukiah to explore the goods and tasty food produced by local artisans and entrepenurs. The third of four markets is held on the first Sunday of the month. If you can’t make it for this weekend, join us for the summers final marketplace on September 8th.  Come and join us for community fun!

Over the last six months local partners, including the ARC Family Resource Center, Ukiah Vecinos en Accion, West Business Development Center, Economic Development & Financing Corporation and Healthy Mendocino’s Poverty Action Team have been working to organize the Community Marketplace. The marketplace concept was developed to encourage entrepenureship and to provide a positive community activity as a way to bridge socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

A group of business minded individuals have participated in a six-week series of trainings offered by West Business Development Center, to learn how to develop and grow their own business. Topics such as marketing, budgeting and business plans were delivered to the group and included one on one help sessions.

These new entrepreneurs join seasoned vendors to create the Community Marketplace for the first Sunday of the month all summer. The Marketplace features food, arts, jewelry and more for the community to purchase, from handcrafted embroidery work, a booth that provides clothes hemming services, to delicious food and drinks.  In addition to vendors, there are informational booths from various agencies, music and, of course, the open play at the Alex Rorabaugh Recreation Center from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

If you are a vendor, craftsperson or talented individual and want to get involved, there are still spots for the September 8th market. Vendor applications are available at the ARC Family Resource Center located at 1640 South State Street. For more details about this event call (707) 234-3300 or email Holly@mendochildren.org
