Violent Crime Rate: Rape

Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the rate (per 100,000 population) of violent crime related to rape or attempted rape.

Why is this important?

Sexual violence refers to sexual activity when consent is not obtained or not freely given. Anyone can experience sexual violence, but the majority of victims are female. In the US, about 1 out of every 5 women and 1 in 17 men report being a victim of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Many of these sexual violence encounters occur between the ages of 12-34. Higher rates of sexual assault occur in females, transgender men and women, and Native Americans/American Indians.

Rape and attempted rape can lead to short and long-term physical and mental health problems. People who are sexually assaulted are more likely to use drugs than the general public and as many as 30% of rape survivors report mental health issues, such as PTSD and suicidal ideation.

Changing social norms, teaching skills, empowering girls and women, and creating protective environments can help reduce the incidence of sexual violence in communities. These tactics involve: promoting healthy sexuality, improving safety in schools, creating an atmosphere of intolerance for harassment, and specific training to reduce sexual violence behaviors.
